 OLYMPIC GAMES





  • The Olympic Games originated in Ancient  Greece.
  • The first games were held in 776 BC in Olympia.
  • The Ancient Olympic Games were always held at Olympia.
  • A great statue of Zeus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world was erected in Olympia to preside over the Games.
  • The games were banned by The Roman Emperor Theodosius in AD 394.
  • The games were revived by the French nobleman Baron Pierre de Coubertin who is regarded as the Father of Modern Olympics.
  • The first modern Olympics were held in 1896 at Athens (Greece).
  • 'Play the game in the spirit of the game' was the message of Baron Pierre de Coubertin.
  • The International Olympic Committee(IOC) has since become the governing body of the Olympic Movement, whose structure and actions are defined by the Olympic Charter.
  • The Olympic Charter is a set of rules and guidelines for the organization of the Olympic Games, and for governing the Olympic Movement.
  • Olympic flag which is white colour was created by Pierre De Coubertin in 1914. Emblem is placed at the centre of the Olympic flag.
  • Olympic flag was raised for the first time at the Antwerp Games in 1920.
  • The epigram of the Olympics is "The essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well."
  • The Olympic Flame was ceremonially lit for the first time at the Amsterdam Games in 1928. The modern version of the Flame was adopted in 1936 at the Berlin Games.
  • Olympics song was composed by Costas Palamass.
  • It was only from 1900(Paris Olympics), women were allowed to participate in the Olympics. Women took part in track and field for the first time in 1928.
  • The Olympic Games are held after every four years. However Olympic Games were not celebrated in 1916, 1940 and 1944 because of the World Wars.
  • The governing body of the Olympic games is "International Olympic Committee"(IOC). It was created on January 23, 1894.
  • The headquarters of the International Olympic Committee is at Lausanne, Switzerland. 
  • Indian Olympic Association was formed in 1927
  • Sir Dorabji Tata is the first President of IOA and V.K Malhotra is its present President.
  • First Asian City to host Summer Olympics was Tokyo in 1964
  • Olympic Museum is located at Lausanne
  • The venues of the Olympics are chosen seven years in advance by the IOC
  • The logo of the games contains an outline of the Sydney Opera House and the boomerang
  • "Citius, Altius, Fortius" (Swifter, Higher, Stronger) is the motto of the Olympics.
  • The Olympic mascot, an animal or human figure representing the cultural heritage of the host country, was introduced in 1968.
  • French and English are the official languages of the Olympic Movement. The other language is the language of the host country.
  • Jesse Owens of the United States was the hero of the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Owens won four gold medals. He was nicknamed as 'The Ebony Antelope'.
  • In the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Nadia Comancei of Romania became the first gymnast in Olympic history to score a perfect ten.
  • The first Olympic athlete who lost his bronze medal for alcohol use was Hans-Gunnar Liljen wall, a Swedish pentathlete at the 1968 Summer Olypmics.



The emblem of the Olympics is composed of five intertwined rings, each of different colours representing the five Continents of the world. Black Ring representing Africa, yellow ring representing Asia, blue ring representing Europe, green ring representing Australia and the red ring representing America.
